A huge congratulations must go to all players, coaches, management, physio's, supporters and parents involved in the 2009 Indoor Cricket World Cup in Brisbane, Australia!!! It was a very successful campaign that displayed brilliant cricket skills and showed huge commitment and dedication to the sport from all involved.
Before this World Cup commenced our teams wer ranked in the following order; Mens - 3rd, Womens - 3rd, 19 Boys - 4th and 19 Girls - 4th. At the completion of the 2009 World Cup the following rankings are as follows; Mens - 2nd, Womens - 3rd, 19 Boys - 2nd and 19 Girls - 2nd.
On behalf of the Board of New Zealand Indoor Cricket although we did not win a World Cup we played in 3 of the 5 Grand Finals. The effort from all involved is something to be very proud of. We have made giant steps towards becoming a competitive country on the world scene.
Our New Zealand Men'a team had a hard fought final against Australia, after defeating them in the semi-final and getting direct entry into the final, where thery were defeated 44 to 55 in a low scoring affair. The New Zealand team put in a huge bowling effort and kept the Australian side to 10 runs after 10 overs, but the Australian's fought back. New Zealand Captain Tim Papps prasied his sides character and gave full credit to the Australian's but said they would bounce back for the next World Cup.
The New Zealand's Womens team were beaten in the Prelim Final by Australia who went onto win the title after being defeated by South Africa in their semi-final.
New Zealand's 19 & Under Boys were up against Australia in the final but were defeated by a strong side 35 to 125. The commitment from this team to make the final was truly a great effort and our future looks bright for the future.
Our 19 & Under Girls team were defeated by Australia in the final 71 t0 115, who they had previously beaten in round play. My thanks and praise to all members of this team who have only been together for 18 months can not be underestimated.
The 2011 World Cup has been allocated to South Africa!! In 104 weeks!!! Thank you to the National Office and the baord for fully backing our players in their quest. Once again thank you to everyone for being part of this journey, we are alot closer than everyone realises.
Yours in cricket, Mark Cini Executive Chairman of New Zealand Indoor Cricket
